Space
Space
Empty and sprawling, space surrounds me
I drift along, allowing myself to be carried away.
And not too far below, Earth spins slowly
Floating above it all, I can just barely see them:
People
People,
Walking around, driving to work,
On the school bus, and grocery shopping
Living their lives, always moving and going
Rarely stopping
People,
They are fascinating to observe.
Frenzied ants, working on their anthill
Running back and forth going about their day
Constant movement
People,
Building lives, trying to leave their marks.
Wanting to be known, spending their lives
Spraying the hydrant; trying to say "I was here"
Living in fear of anonymity
People
From the tranquility of space,
I can almost remember being one of them
And yet, time stands still for me while they,
Continue on.
The wide expanse sprawls around me.
I glide sluggishly through space.
Watching Earth, which feels like a distant memory;
I almost wish to join them, but I am miles away from
People
I love the feeling of watching people from a distance, and this poem captures it very well. Looking forward to discussing this in class.
